The Ethiopian women national team have beaten Rwanda 3-2 on the ongoing CECAFA Women Cup Group B tie in Nejeru Technical Center as they book a place in the semis. The duel was the first ever game for Lucy in the regional tourney. Rwanda needed maximum point but fail to Ethiopia in an enticing encounter.
A brace from star striker Loza Abera and Meskerem Kanko was enough to send Lucy to the semis. Ethiopia took an early lead in the third minute through Loza’s strike. However, Ethiopia couldn’t capitalize on the earlylead as they missed three open goal scoring chances. She-Amavubi, as the Rwanda women national team termed, leveled matters at stroke of half time when Dorothee Mukeshimana headed home a corner as both nations went to the dressing room tied up at 1-1.
Loza yet again handed Lucy the lead as she found the back of the net after a cross from Shitaye Sisay. Nonetheless, the lead was short-lived as Rwanda’s Captain Sifa Gloria Nibagwire fired a shot past the stranded Ethiopian goalie Liya Shebiru. Lucy pushed to get a goal and they were successful after two minutes when center back Meskerem restored the lead.
The result saw Ethiopia booking a place in the semifinal while Rwanda sent home packing after a back to back defeat against Tanzania and Ethiopia. The two qualified nations, Ethiopia and Tanzania, will battle it out to top Group B on Friday as hosts Uganda and Burundi face off in a crucial match to book a semifinal place on Thrusday. Kenya have already qualified with 6 points from two games.
