Premier League | Kidus Giorgis Win Fourth Straight League Title as Dedebit lose to Adama

The 2016/17 Ethiopian Premier League have been decided earlier today as holders Kidus Giorgis successfully defended their crown with a slander win over Ethio-Electric. Second placed Dedebit lost 2-1 to Adama Ketema while Sidama Bunna were held by ArbaMinch Ketema. The race for safety at the bottom also takes center stage after Dire Dawa Ketema and Ethiopia Nigd Bank recorded a vital win.

Kidus Giorgis were crowned champions for a fourth season in a row, having three games on hand after Dedebit and Sidama Bunna dropped points. The 1-0 victory over Ethio-Electric put them on glory likewise Dedebit and Sidama Bunn’s failure to win their games meant the Horsemen can no longer be caught as they sit at the summit with 55 points.  Adane Girma struck the lone goal of the tie in the second half.

Adama Ketema cruised past Dedebit 2-1 in Adama. Dawa Hotessa and veteran striker Tafese Tesfaye struck in the first interval as the homers took a 2 goals cushion. Getaneh Kebede, who happened to be leading the top goal scoring chart, halved the deficit from the spot 10 minutes from time. ArbaMinch Ketema forced an away draw against Sidama Bunna in Yirgalem. The Crocodiles played out a barren draw against Sidama. The results meant both Dedebit and Sidama Bunna are now out of the title race.

A last gasp goal in Sodo gave Ethiopia Nigd Bank the edge over Wolaitta Dicha in a relegation dogfight. The Bankers sealed the win in the stroke of full time through Fikreysus TweldeBirhane. The win handed Nigd Bank a glimpse of hope for safety while Dicha are battling relegation just like the Bankers.

A Surafel Daniel first half spot kick was enough to hand Dire Dawa Ketema a win over Hawassa Ketema. Elsewhere, Woldia and Jimma Aba Bunna have to settle for a point each following their goalless draw.

The week 28 biggest result came from Gonder with Fasil Ketema trouncing Mekelakeya 3-0. Abdulrahman Mubarak’s first half brace gave Fasil a 2-0 lead before Abel Yalew, on loan from Dedebit, put the game to bed 3 minutes following the resumption.

On Wednesday, Addis Ababa Ketema were the first side to be relegated from the league as they were beaten 2-0 by a dominant Ethiopia Bunna side. Abubakher Nessro and Nigerian import Samuel Sanumi were on target for Bunna under the interim coach Edelu Dereje.
