Day 3 of the Addis Ababa City Cup saw Group A game being played. Kidus Giorgis beat Jimma Aba Bunna 1-0 while Mekelakeya twice came from behind to force a two all draw against Ethio-Electric.
Kidus Giorgis beat Premier League rookies Jimma Aba Bunna 1-0 in a heavily contested tie to book a place in the semi-final. The West Ethiopian side kept the record Ethiopian champions at bay for much of the game with a strong and effective defending. Salahdin Said forced a superb save from Jemal Tassew in the first interval. Aba Bunna should have taken lead early in the second half when Haider Sherefa hits the upright from close range. Giorgis eventually broke the deadlock in the 79th minute through Abubakher Sanni, who grabbed his third goal of the tourney.
Mekelakeya and Ethio-Electric played out a 2-2 draw in the other group encounter. Electric stormed into an early lead in the 16th minute through new singing Ibrahim Fofan who slot home from close range after collecting an excellent long range pass from Addis Negash. The Army side got back on track 9 minutes later when Samuel Saliso fired past Electric custodian Ogna Omugena. Burundian international Didier Kavumbagu handed the two times Premier League champions the lead at the hour mark after being set up by Dawit Estifanos. Mekelakeya yet again equalized through second half substitute Yetesha Gizaw 8 minutes from time.
Kidus Giorgis have already booked a semi-final ticket after collecting maximum points from two games while Jimma Aba Bunna, Electric and Mekelakeya will fight for second place to revive their hope of reaching the last four. Group B games continue today as Dedebit play Addis Ababa Ketema in an early kickoff and Adama Ketema facing Ethiopia Nigd Bank.
