Ethiopian side Kidus Giorgis face off Ugandan torchbearers KCCA in the Total CAF Champions League first round first leg fixture in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, March 7. Kidus Giorgis had a bye from the preliminary round following South Sudan outfit Al Salam Wau failed to honor a match while KCCA needed an away goal to overcome CNaPS Sports of Madagascar.
KCCA has lost almost all of their away games that they have played in the continental stage since March 2017. KCCA’s captain Timoty Awany alluded that the Kampala based club will come out stronger in away games since the Wednesday’s crucial tie. “Actually tomorrow’s game won’t be the same as the games we have been losing away. We have been correcting our mistakes while we were trying to put things in a good way. I think we are going to put a big challenge and a good game. I can say that the advantage we have is that we have been playing many games in the continent since last season. The boys have the confidence to beat any opponent. We never know what the outcome will be on the tomorrow’s game.”
Awany, who happened to be sent off during the 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup when Uganda shared spoils with Ethiopia on December last year, said Kidus Giorgis is a good side. “Kidus Giorgis is a very good side. They are a very good side with the ball and they use the ball well. We are also good because we have good players who can use the ball and maintain the pressure.”
KCCA missed out on the last season’s Champions League group stages after they fall to South African outfit Mamelodi Sundowns.
