Debub Police joins Bahir Dar Kenema in gaining promotion to the Ethiopian Premier League after beating Dire Dawa Police 3-0. Eric Muranda, Biruk Elias, and Berhanu Bekelle grabbed the goals to send the South based club to the top flight. The Girma Tadesse led Debub Police finished the season with 61 points.
In securing promotion, Debub Police FC, who were established in 2004, ensure a return to the first division for the first time since 2010.
In another cruicial game, Jimma Aba Buna ran out 3-1 victors over Hadiya Hossana to finish second with 59 points and secure a playoff spot. The team from Jimma will now face Shire Ketema in their last game of the season where a victory will see them return to the Premier League just a season after their relegation.
A Sintayehu Mengistu brace gave Halaba Ketema a 2-1 victory against Welkite Ketema away, but it was not enough to lift his side into the playoff as they finish 3rd behind Jimma Aba Buna on goal difference.
According to the Federation’s Program, Debub Police will face Group A winners Bahir Dar Kenema at Dire Dawa Stadium on September 2 in a bid to be crowned champions of the Ethiopian Higher League. The penultimate game will see Jimma Aba Buna play against Shire Ketema to determine who will be the 3rd team to gain promotion.
