Ethiopia flag bearers Kidus Giorgis were shown the exit door by their DR Congolese hosts TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi.
TP Mazembe emerged victorious 1-0 in game played out at a packed Stade TP Mazembe this afternoon to progress to the last 16.
Ugandan import Robert Odongkara saved Kasusla’s free kick for the games first attempt on goal. Kidus Giorgis’s first goalscoring chance came in the 35th minute as winger Behailu Assefa saw his goal bound effort parried away by Ivorian keeper Sylvian Gbohouo. Jonathan Bolingi and center back Salif Coulibaly came close to open the score before the interval.
The 2015 CAF Champions League winners Mazembe continued on their dominance in the second half but failed to break Kidus Giorgis’s backline till the 86th minute. Ghanaian midfielder Solomon Asante won a dubious penalty deep into the second half for the hosts as Congo striker Bolingi made no mistake from the spot to take the tie beyond reach for the Addis Ababa outfit.
The result ensured Mazembe went through to the next stage beating the Horsemen 3-2 on aggregate.
TP Mazembe and Morocco champions Wydad Casablanca will square off in the last 16 tie as both sides look for a spot in the group stages.
