Premier League: Week 5 Saw Six Draws

The 2016/17 Ethiopian Premier League week 5 elapsed with six draws out of the eight games played across the country. Only Addis Ababa sides Ethiopia Bunna and Ethiopia Nigd Bank collected maximum points during the fifth round.

Table toppers Kidus Giorgis and Adama Ketema have settled for a point each after their draw in Addis. The game was officiated by International arbiter Bamlak Tessema, who happened to be the only Ethiopian selected to officiate African Nations Cup 2017. Both sides had a chance to score but their defenses stood firm as they share spoil.

Ethiopia Nigd Bank came from behind to beat Addis Ababa Ketema 2-1. Addis Ababa Ketema took the lead through Zerihun Birhanu‘s 77th minute strike. The Bankers hit back instantly three minutes later as Nigerian Peter Nuwadke converted a spot kick. Second half substitute Samuel Yohannis sealed the win in the dying moments of the tie to hand coach Tsegaye Kidanmariam maiden three points of the season.

Hawassa Ketema and Mekelakeya played out a two all draw in a very controversial game that saw four red cards. Menyelu Wendimu gave the Army side the lead at stroke of half time before Togolese Arafat Djako leveled matters in the 58th minute. Winger Gadissa Mebrate gave the two times Premier League champions the lead ten minutes following the equalizer. Nonetheless, he was red carded for taking his shirt off while celebrating. The match official has also gave two Hawassa and one Mekelakeya player their marching order. Carlos Damtew rescued Mekelakeya just before the end of the duel to salvage a point away.
