Ethiopia and Rwanda will battle it out to secure a spot in African Nations Championship (CHAN) which will due in Morocco comes January 2018. The African Football Confederation have confirmed the new developments earlier on Saturday morning.
Both Ethiopia and Rwanda have been knocked out of the biennial tourney in the last qualifying round. Ethiopia lost to Sudan 2-1 while Rwanda bow out of the competition after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of East African powerhouse Uganda. Egypt were awarded a spot in the championship but the rebuffed the call and opted not to participate. As per the regulation of CAF, a team from North African Zone should have been awarded with a place in the tournament but CAF decided otherwise. CAF Media Division head Junior Biniam exclusively told Soccer Ethiopia the executive committee decided to grant a place for CECAFA region. “According to the regulations, a team from the North should have been taking part. That should have been the case. But the Executive Committee decided otherwise,” said Biniam.
Ethiopia will host Rwanda in Addis Ababa on Sunday November 5 while the return leg slated for November 12 in Kigali. Rwanda coach Antoine Hey has summoned a 24 men squad for the upcoming fixture. The Amavubi’s set to commence preparation on Sunday.
