Veteran Ethiopian striker Fikru Teferra has hold on to his retirement plans to keep his footballing career going after signing a deal with Indian Second Division side Mohammedan Sporting Club. The former Ethiopian international has been in hiatus for longer than 6 months after leaving South African outfit Highlands Park in June 2017.
Mohammedan were in search of a striker following Trinidadian forward Willis Plaza left the club after barely joining them a month ago. The ex Adama Ketema and Kidus Giorgis man was in negotiations in hope of returning to action as Mohammedan captured his signature. I league clubs East Bengal and Mohun Bagan had unsuccessful negotiations with the player on a possible transfer.
He was also linked with Ateletico Kolkata for a move where reports from India claimed Fikru snubbed his former employers. The deal with Mohammedan is said to be until the end of the season. Fikru has officially joined the club today although he will need some time to make his league debut.
In a career spanning 7 countries, Fikru has built a name abroad particularly in South Africa and India. The striker managed to play for 16 clubs where 14 of them are located outside of Ethiopia. His frequent moves to different clubs earned him to be called ‘Marco Polo’. In India due to his acrobatic style goals and superior aerial presence he is nicknamed ‘The Flying Fikru’.
