Goals galore in Cairo as the Ethiopian women national team thrashed Libya in Total African Women Cup of Nations qualifier first leg. Lucy managed to record their biggest win in an international tournament as they brushed Libya aside 8-0. Rehima Zerega for the second international game running hit a hattrick.
Ethiopia took a resounding 6-0 lead in the first interval to put the game to bed. Rehima Zerega opened the scoring five minutes into the game before Loza Abera doubles the lead in the 16th minute. The veteran Rehima and Loza completed their braces in quick succession as Ethiopia led 4-0 in the half hour mark. Mirekat Feleke and Bizuayehu Tadesse struck the fifth and sixth before half time as the Libyans struggled to get back to the tie. Bethlehem Kefyalew also managed to get included in the score sheet likewise Rehima, who hit three in her last national team appearance against Uganda, grabbed a hattrick in the 59th minute in what was a one sided affair.
The win in Cairo will make the national side’s second leg encounter a bit easy. Head trainer Selam Zeraye told Soccer Ethiopia that her charges have already done 80% of their first round qualifier assignment as they are in pole position to advance to the last qualifying round.
This score line is registered as the biggest win ever recorded by the women national team. Ethiopia beat Malawi and Kenya with the same score line 5-0 but the comfortable 8-0 win over Libya is the biggest win recorded for now.
The national team is expected to jet into Addis Ababa at the wee hours of Thursday morning. They will face Libya in the return leg slated for Tuesday, April 10.
