Kidus Giorgis left it late to beat archrivals Ethiopia Bunna 1-0 in the Sheger Derby encounter played out in Addis Ababa. Mulualem Mesfin’s header was the difference between the two sides as Kidus Giorgis came out victorious in the much anticipated derby game of the country.
As the recent Sheger Derbies, the game was a dull affair with eyesore display from both sides. Ethiopia Bunna came the closest to open the scoring but were futile in their attempts. Samson Tilahun, Baptiste Faye and Samuel Sanumi all tried to break Kidus Giorgis’s backline in the opening minutes after the onset. Ethiopia Bunna largely depended on long passes to their tall Senegalese forward Faye while Kidus Giorgis failed on their build up attempts for much of the first half.
After the second 45 resumed Bunna almost broke the deadlock through Captain Mesud Mohammed, however his effort from inside the ox was well saved by Kidus Giorgis goalie Robert Odongkara. Second half substitute Adane Girma twice failed to connect easy chances following a run of play. Mulualem, who was unmarked and unchallenged, rose high to head home an Abebaw Butako’s corner kick two minutes before time as Kidus Giorgis registered a victory over Ethiopia Bunna in a league game virtually after three seasons wait.
Kidus Giorgis leapfrogged Ethiopia Bunna to occupy third with 33 points having two games on hand while Bunna are fifth with 32 points. Jimma Aba Jifar tops the league with 38 points.
