Albanian side KF Skenderbeu have wrapped up the Superliga title on match day 32 after beating KS Lushnja 4-2. Ethiopian midfielder Biniyam Belay managed to win title on his maiden stay in Europe.
Second placed and last season’s league champions FK Kukesi were beaten 3-2 against KF Teuta Durres giving Skenderbeu the edge to complete the race for title having three games on hand. Biniyam joined the Korce based outfit at the start of the season following a try out stint at Bundesliga 2 and Austria second division sides. He went on to make some few appearances in league, Albanian Cup and Europa League matches scoring twice the cup game. Skenderbeu have reached the Albanian Cup final as Biniyam could end the season being a double winner.
In 2017, another Ethiopian player named Sefonias Asres has won the Lithuanian Football Cup with FC Stumbras.
Africans outshone Lushnja as Gambian striker Ali Sowe grabbed a hat-trick and Nigerian Segun Adeniyi added the other goal. Skenderbeu have 72 points while Kukesi are 11 points adrift of the table toppers. It is Skenderbeu’s 7th title in 8 years.
Although the club dominated the Albanian league scene, Skenderbeu are accused of routinely manipulating games for betting purposes and may be banned for 10 years.
