St. George have stated via their Facebook account that they have decided to terminate the contract of Head Coach Manuel Vaz Pinto. The Portuguese had a year left on his contract.
The decision doesn’t come as a surprise after Vaz Pinto failed to win the Ethiopian Premier League and Ethiopian Cup last season, in turn failing to progress to Continental tournaments.
The club hierarchy and fans were also not happy about the style of play which, they felt, was neither entertaining nor effective. Last season the horsemen failed to make their mark in the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup exiting both tournaments early on.
The timing of the announcement comes as a surprise as it was made on the opening day of the Ethiopian Premier League season. It has been a while since St. George appointed a local coach. As such they are expected to hire an experienced foreigner to the vacant post.
