​Premier League Review | Game week 5

5th week Ethiopian Premier League fixtures were held till yesterday as Mekelle cruised to a slender win against Wolwalo in the highly anticipated Tigray Derby while Fasil shared points with Sebeta in the dramatic encounter as there were also victory’s for Jimma Aba Jiffar and Wolkite Ketema.

Game week 5 fixtures commenced on Saturday with 6 games taking place, to start of Sidama Bunna maintained their superiority over cross city rivals Hawassa Ketema as they triumph in the local derby, Amanuel Endale, Habtamu Gezahagn, and Yigezu Bogale were on target for Sidama as Biruk Beyene scored the conciliation goal for Hawassa Ketema.

Adisse Kassa’s Hawassa suffered a back to back loss after their impressive start to the campaign, while Sidama returned to winning ways after there loss to Mekelle 70 Enderta last weekend.


Newcomers Wolkite Ketema registered there first-ever away win in the top flight with the promising youngster Chala Teshita making the difference against resilient Wolaita Dicha at the Sodo Stadium, Wolkite yet to play at there ground are having a good start to the there maiden season in the top flight with 7 points 3 points adrift from league leaders.

At the Tigray Stadium Sehul Shire shared points with Adama Ketema, Habtamu Shewalem’s successful spot-kick was canceled by Dula Mulatu’s exquisite long-range shoot at the dying minutes of the second half, Shire under a turmoil off the pitch secured another hard-fought draw this week after sharing points with Kidus Giorgis with their ultra-defensive approach last weekend also Diredawa Ketema drew 0-0 with Ethiopia Bunna in the Diredawa international stadium.


Also on Saturday Hadiya Hossana once again failed to register all three points at there own back yard, this time out they played out 2-2 draw with Bahirdar Ketema, Bismarck Appiah and Desta Gichamo scored for the host but strikes from Mamadou Sidibe and Fitsum Alemu were enough to share points for the “Wave of Tana”, Hossana have found things a bit harder after promotion and are still winless and are bottom of the table with only two points.

Meanwhile, at Western Ethiopia, Jimma Aba Jiffare who returned home after 2 match exile collected all three points at the hands of the serial premier league winners Kidus Giorgis, Goals from Buzayehu Endashawe and Amrella Dellta courtesy to Kidus Giorgis sloppy defending were enough to hand Jimma there first win of the campaign, Henock Adunga scored the conciliation goal Giorgis aginst his former side, Kidus Giorgis who were yet to conceded a goal coming to this weekend conceded goal for the first time this season.


In the only fixture on Sunday Fasil Kenema and Sebeta Played a 6 goal thriller at the Addis Ababa Stadium. Fasil Ketema was leading 3-1 till the end of the 90 minutes following goals from Osi Mawli, Shemeket Guggesa, and Mujib Qassim but after an amazing turn of events Sebeta draw 3-3 after scoring two goals in the additional minutes as Fitsum G/Mariam grabbed a brace for resurgent Sebeta and Aschalew Girma got the other one.


On Monday at the Tigray international stadium between current league leaders, Wolwalo A/U and Mekelle 70 Enderta at the Tigray Derby ended 1-0  in favor of the reigning league Champions, Mekelle’s savior Amanuel G/Micheal was once again the difference netting a landmark 50th Goal in his 4th season at Mekelle 70 Enderta.
