The Ethiopian women national team have been pitted against Libya in African Women Cup of Nations qualifier first round doubleheader fixture which is slated between February 26 to March 6. The tournament will be held in 2018 in West African nation of Ghana.
Lucys’ missed out on two successive African Women Cup of Nations editions in 2014 and 2016. In 2014, Ethiopia lost to Ghana in the qualifying round while senior women national side was knocked out from the tourney following a 2-1 aggregate loss to Algeria. For the 2018 edition, Ethiopia will be facing Libya in the first qualifying round. The winner takes on the winner of the Senegal and Algeria duel in the last qualifying round.
Lucy, under the guidance of Coach Meseret Manni, participated in the CECAFA Women Championship which was held last year in Uganda. Since finishing third in the CECAFA Women Championship after hammering hosts Uganda 4-1, the team have not played any friendly and competitive games for the last one year.
Top ranking African women national teams, AWCON champions Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa will get first round byes.
